You should now be on a page titled Wireless Access Point List and Unique Settings.

  • The Wireless Access Point should be Enabled.
  • The Wi-Fi Protected Setup should be disabled. Having WPS enabled allows your network to be cracked much easier.
  • Next is the Wireless Channel. We recommend choosing channel 1,6, or 11 for the least interference. For more information on this subject check out our guide on WiFi channels.
  • Leave the Power Setting at 400mW.
  • The next section is titled Wireless Network Shared Settings. The first box is called Network Name (SSID). This network name is important as your network identifier. Make sure the name you enter here does not include any personal information. For ideas and information about this, go to our guide on wireless names.
  • Below that is the SSID Broadcast. If you enable this it is easier to access your network and visible to neighboring WiFi devices. If you decide to disable this, remember it is harder to access your network and invisible to your neighbors but not to your neighborhood hacker.
  • The section you should now be in is the Security section. The first choice is to enable or disable the security. Make sure that you enable it.
  • Next is the Authentication Type. We highly recommend choosing WPA2-PSK (AES). This is the best security available with today's technology. For more information on this subject check out our guide called WEP vs. WPA.
  • Now to choose your password. Tick the radio button labeled Use custom Wireless Network Key and place your cursor in the box to the right. Use a password that is as long as possible and random. Your password should not contain any personal information. Don't use any word found in a dictionary. For more help on creating a strong password click the link of how to choose a strong password.
  • Go ahead and leave everything else at their defaults. Don't forget to Save before you exit.

Congratulations, you have configured your wireless network to be more secure.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
