Sometimes it becomes necessary to reset a router back to factory defaults. This is usually done because previous configurations have been forgotten or lost.

A reset is not the same thing as a reboot. Rebooting a router is simply cycling the power by turning it off and back on again. Resetting a router is more dangerous because it erases all previous configurations and reverts the entire router back to factory defaults.

Warning: Resetting your router should not be done until other troubleshooting options have been exhausted. Some things that change are:

  • The router username and password
  • The WiFi username/SSID and password
  • ISP username and password are erased and need to be re-entered if you use a DSL connection
  • All configurations such as firewalls, port forwards, and even IP address changes are erased
