You start on the Status page of Atlantis-Land A02-RA243-W54M router. Begin by clicking the Configuration link in the left sidebar. Then, below that choose Wireless.

You should now be on the page you see above. The first thing needs to be changed is the ESSID. This is the name you give your network so you can distinguish it from other networks around you. Below that is the option of Hide ESSID. If you choose to leave this Disabled it means your network is visible to the wireless devices near your router. If you decide to Enable this is becomes invisible to surrounding devices but not necessarily to a hacker with the proper tools.

The last thing that needs to be checked on this page is the Channel ID. If you live in the United States there are 11 channels to choose from. There is only room in the spectrum for three channels that do not overlap each other, channels 1,6, and 11. You need to make sure you are using one of these three channels. Click the Apply button at the bottom of the page, then tick the link in the left sidebar labeled Wireless Security.

On this page, you need to make sure that the Security Mode for your network is the best it can be. There are several different choices you can make here. WEP vs. WPA is a great guide for more information on this topic. We strongly recommend using WPA2 Pre-Shared Key.

Next is the WPA Algorithm. This is the type of encryption you are to use when transmitting your data on the airwaves. There are two choices, TKIP and AES. TKIP is an older version of encryption and flaws have been found. We recommend using AES. It is a much newer and stronger encryption.

Below that is the WPA Shared Key. This is the password you are going to use to access your network. It is very important to create a strong password because it is also used in the encryption. Create a password of at least 20 characters. Avoid using any words in a dictionary. Avoid using any personal information. Go ahead and leave the Group Key Renewal at the default setting. This is just asking how often you want AES to create a new encryption key from your password.

Click the Apply button before you exit. That's it, you did it!

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
