An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

You should now be on a page like the one you see here. The first thing that needs to be changed is the SSID. The SSID is the name you give your wireless network so you can identify it from the others around you. When you create an original name be sure that you don't use any personal information here. For more information on this topic, check out our guide titled Wireless names.

Next, be sure that the Country is the correct one.

Nothing else on this page should be changed. Simply click the Apply/Save button at the bottom of the screen. Then, click Security in the left sidebar.

Scroll down this page until you see the heading of Manual Setup AP. Under that is the Network Authentication. Use this drop down menu to choose WPA2. This is by far the strongest security protocol you can use. Check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA for more information.

Next is the WPA Pre-Shared Key, or the WPA2 Pre-Shared Key. This is the password you use to access your wireless network. You need to create a strong password of at least 20 characters. This password shouldn't contain any personal information in it. Try to avoid any words that can be found in a dictionary. We do recommend using symbols, numbers, and capital letters if possible. For a good guide on the topic, look our guide titled How to choose a strong password.

There is one other thing you should change on this page. Using the WPA Encryption drop down menu, choose the option of either TKIP or AES. We recommend AES. This is the strongest encryption available today. TKIP has flaws that make it much less secure.

When you are finished on this page, click the Apply/Save button at the bottom of the page. Then in the left sidebar click the link titled Advanced.

This is the wifi advanced page from your Aztech DSL1000EW-L router.

This takes you to a page like the one you see above. There is only one thing that may need to be changed here. Near the top of the page is a drop down list titled Channel. This only needs to be changed if you are not on channel 1,6, or 11. Overlapping channels cause a lot of interference. These three don't overlap one another, for a full explanation on this topic please check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

Click the Apply/Save button at the bottom of the page when you are finished. That's it, you did it!

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
