Setup WiFi on the Cisco DPC3848V

The Cisco DPC3848V router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Login To The Cisco DPC3848V

To get started configuring the Cisco DPC3848V WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Cisco DPC3848V

We begin this guide on the Home page of the Cisco DPC3848V router. Start off by clicking the Wireless option located near the top of the page. From there click Radio Settings just below that.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Cisco DPC3848V

First we'll set the Standard Channel. Set it to either 1, 6, or 11. Why is this important? Read our WiFi Channels Guide to find out.

Now we'll set the Wireless Network Name (SSID). Make sure to set it in the 2.4GHz Wireless Network section of the page. Enter your desired network name into the provided box. It's a good idea to avoid using any personal information. For more information check out our Wireless Names Guide.

That's it for this page. Click Save Settings at the bottom of the page and then Wireless Security near the top.

Start off by opening the drop down menu labeled Security Mode and choosing WPA or WPA2-Personal. This option will provide you with the best security. To learn more check out our WEP vs. WPA Guide.

The Encryption needs to be set to AES.

Finally, in the box marked Pre-Shared Key enter your desired network password. A good password is 14-20 characters and includes no personal information. For more helpful hints take a look at our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

That's it! You're finished. Just don't forget to click Save Settings before closing the page.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
