Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Dlink DCS-2120

router setup
This is the setup page from your Dlink router.

You should now be on a page labeled Network settings. Scroll down this page until you come to the section labeled WLAN configuration. The first thing you should do is change the SSID. This is the name you give your network so that you can identify it later on. We recommend using no personal information in this name for security reasons. To learn more about the SSID, read our Wireless Names Guide.

Now, skip down to the Channel list. There are 11 to 13 channels here, depending on what country you live in. Of these channels there is only room in the spectrum for up to three that don't overlap. Overlapping channels causes a lot of interference. Be sure you are on one of these three channels, 1,6, or 11. To learn more about this subject, read our WiFi Channels Guide.

Next is the Security. The best option this camera gives you is WPA-PSK. Please read our WEP vs. WPA Guide to learn the differences between the security modes. We recommend updating your firmware to allow for WPA2-PSK. This is the best security option today.

After choosing the appropriate security, you will be asked to provide a Password. This password should be strong, we recommend at least 20 characters. To learn how to create a strong and memorable password, read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

You are then asked to Confirm Password. Go ahead and re-type the password you just created.

That's all there is to it, just use the green Apply button in the lower right corner of the page.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
