On this page I explain how to reset the Dlink DI-624M router back to factory defaults. Before we begin it's important that you know the difference between a reset and a reboot. On this page when I use the word reboot I am referring to a cycle in the power the device. This is done to solve minor behavioral problems you may experience with your device. If you want to do this manually you would unplug the power source, wait about 30 seconds, then plug the power back in. In this guide when I use the word reset I am referring to a complete factory restore of all settings. All your personal configurations are erased and replaced with the original factory presets.
Warning: Resetting this device can cause more problems for you if you don't know which settings have been changed and which ones have not. It's best to assume all settings are changed. Our recommendation is to make a list of any personal configurations you have made in the past. Consider the following:
- The router's login username and password are erased and put back to factory settings.
- The Internet name and password are reverted back to factory defaults as well.
- If you use a DSL connection for your Internet you need to re-enter the ISP (Internet Service Provider) username and password. Call your ISP for the details.
- Have you ever changed an IP address? Have you ever forwarded a port for a favorite program? These and any other changes you have made will be erased.

Use a VPN
Have you considered using a VPN when you connect to the internet? A VPN is a great way to increase your security and anonymity while surfing.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes securely sharing your home network super simple. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.
- Keep your router powered on.
- Turn your router around so you are looking at the back panel.
- Locate the tiny recessed button labeled Reset.
- Using a paperclip or other similar object press and hold the reset button down for a full 10 seconds.
Warning: If you don't hold the reset button down for a full 10 seconds you end up rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you wanted.
After the reset is complete all your personal configurations are erased. Consider other troubleshooting methods if you want to try and avoid this loss.
Login to the Dlink DI-624M
Now that you've reset the Dlink DI-624M router you'll need to log into it. Do this by using the factory default username and password provided to you in our Login Guide.
Tip: If the defaults aren't logging you in it could be because the reset button wasn't held for long enough.
Change Your Password
Next you should set a new password for your router. Bear in mind that this password will only protect your router settings, not your wireless network. However it's always a good idea to set a strong password. For help in doing so visit our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.
Tip: Avoid losing your new password by writing it on a note and taping it to the underside of your router.
Setup WiFi on the Dlink DI-624M
Now is a great time to check your wireless settings as some of them have been reset as well. The SSID and Internet password need your personal touch. We recommend making sure the encryption is set to the standard you want. The strongest is WPA2. For more on this on this topic, check out our guide titled How to Setup WiFi on the Dlink DI-624M.
