Next is the Channel Number. There are three channels that should be used by everyone, channels 1,6, or 11. Read our WiFi Channels Guide for more information.

Tick the Apply button when you are finished. Then in the left sidebar click Security Settings.

This takes you to the Security Settings page. Here, use the Encryption menu to choose the option of WPA pre-shared key.

Next is the WPA Unicast Cipher Suite. This is just narrowing down your WPA choice you just made. We recommend choosing WPA2(AES). To learn more about the different options, read our WEP vs. WPA Guide.

Below that is the WPA Pre-shared Key Format. Set this to Passphrase.

The final thing you need to change is the Pre-shared Key. This is the password used to access your network. This is also used in the Cipher method and needs to be strong for your networks security. Our advice is to use 14-20 characters with at least one symbol, number, and capital letter. For more tips on creating a strong password, read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

That's it, don't forget to click the Apply button before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
