If you have been trying to login to the Huawei E5180As-22 router and been unable to, you might need to reset the router back to the original factory default settings.

There is some confusion between a reset and a reboot. In this guide when I use the term reboot I am only referring to a cycle in the power to the unit. When I use the term reset I am referring to a complete factory restore of all settings. This means every single setting you have ever changed is erased and returned to factory defaults.

Warning: ALL your personal data is gone after a reset. It is a really good idea to make a list of all the possible settings you have changed in the past. These settings include:

  • The router's main username and password.
  • The WiFi settings such as SSID and Internet password.
  • If this is a DSL router you need to re-enter the ISP (Internet Service Provider) username and password. Call your ISP for these details.
  • Have you made any other changes? How about port forwarding or IP address changes? These need to be written down as well.

While the router is on take a sharp object such as a pin or bent paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. This starts the reset process. Make sure you hold this button down for a full 10 seconds. If you don't you may end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you wanted.

Warning: Be careful to not unplug or turn off the device while the reset process is happening. Doing so can result in permanent damage to the unit.

Remember a reset like this one erases every single personal setting you have setup on this device. I strongly recommend trying other troubleshooting methods first.

Login to the Huawei E5180As-22

Following the router reset, you will need to login to your Huawei E5180As-22 router. This can be done by using the default IP address, password, and username. Not sure what these are? You can check them out in our Login Guide for the Huawei E5180As-22 router.

Tip: Can't login with the defaults? You might have accidentally rebooted the router instead of resetting it. Try resetting it again, but hold down the reset button for a little longer this time.

Change Your Password

Next, you should consider changing the default password for your router. Default passwords are easy to guess and not secure, so making a new password is important. If you need any help with making a secure password, take a look at our Choosing a Strong Password guide.

Tip: Keep from losing your password by writing it down on a note of some kind and attaching it to the underside of the router.
