Have you been trying to login to the Huawei HG850a router without luck? It might be time to consider a reset. A reset like this one is not the same thing as a reboot. When you reboot a router you cycle the power to the unit. When you reset a router you take all the settings and return them to the original factory defaults.

Warning: Resetting a router is a big step and should not be taken lightly. We suggest creating a list of all the possible settings that have been changed in the past. Some of these settings will include:

  • the router's main access username and password.
  • port forwards you have created in the past.
  • DNS address changes.
  • IP address changes you have made.

Reset the Huawei HG850a

Below I have an image of a Huawei router side panel. This is where the reset button should be located. This "button" looks more like a pinhole in the panel of the device.

Once you have found the reset button make sure the router is on. Then with a straightened paperclip or similar object press and hold the reset button for about 10 seconds. Most Huawei routers have setup the reset button so if you don't hold the button down for long enough you end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you wanted. Make sure to hold the reset button down for over 10 seconds.

Remember a reset like this one is going to erase every single setting you have ever changed in the history of this device. We highly recommend exhausting your other troubleshooting methods before you continue.

Login to the Huawei HG850a

Now that you've reset the Huawei HG850a router you'll want to log into it. This is accomplished by using the factory default username and password. We have these provided for your use in our Login Guide.

Tip: Defaults not working for you? It could be because the reset button wasn't held down for long enough.

Change Your Password

Once you've successfully reset and logged into your router we recommend setting a new password for your router. This can be anything you like, however bear in mind that a strong password is 14-20 characters in length and includes no personal information. For more help be sure to take a look through our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

Tip: Avoid losing your new password by writing it on a sticky note and attaching it to the underside of your router.
