This guide will cover how to properly reset the Linksys BEFW11P1 router back to factory defaults. Before I begin however I need to explain the difference between a reset and a reboot. When you reboot a router you simply are cycling the power to the unit. No settings are changed during a reboot. When you reset a router you take every setting that has ever been changed and revert them back to the way they were when the router was new.

Warning: A reset should only be done after other troubleshooting techniques have failed to work. It is also a good idea to create a list of all the possible settings you have changed in the past as they will all be erased. These settings could include:

  • The router's main username and password.
  • The Internet information such as SSID, encryption and password.
  • If this is a DSL router you need to re-enter the Internet Service Provider username and password. Call your ISP for these details.
  • Are there any other settings you have changed? How about IP addresses or port forwarding?

Login to the Linksys BEFW11P1

After the reset is finished you need to login to the Linksys BEFW11P1 router using the default values from the factory. We have collected this default information for you in our Linksys BEFW11P1 Login Guide.

Tip: If the default information didn't work it is possible that the reset button wasn't held down long enough to reset the router. Try again, but hold down the reset button for a little longer.

Change Your Password

The default password that you just used to access the router should be changed as soon as possible to keep your router secure. Try to make an original password. If you need help on creating a password, check out our Choosing a Strong Password guide.

Tip: To avoid losing your password try writing it down on some paper and attach it to the bottom of the router.
