On this page I will be showing you how to reset the Linksys WRT300N router back to the original factory defaults.

This is not the same thing as a reboot. When you reboot a router you cycle the power to the unit. No settings are changed during a reboot. When you reset a router you take all the current settings and return every one of them back to factory defaults.

Warning: A factory reset like this one is a big step. Do not take this lightly. I recommend trying other methods of troubleshooting before you decide to reset. It is also a great idea to make a list of all the possible settings you have changed in the past. This list should include:

  • The router's main username and password used to access the router setup pages. Do not confuse these with the WiFi settings.
  • The WiFi settings such as the SSID/network name and Internet password.
  • Are you resetting a DSL router? If you are make sure to re-enter the Internet Service Provider (ISP) username and password as well. If you don't know what these are call your local Internet provider.
  • Write down any other settings you can think of. This includes anything from port forwards to IP addresses or parental controls.

Use a VPN Instead

Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.

We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.

When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:

  • Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
  • Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
  • Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
  • Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
  • Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.

This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.

Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.

NordVPN is the fastest VPN!

Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.

Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.

After you have decided to reset the Linksys WRT300N router you need to locate the reset button on the outside of the router itself. I have found it for you and circled it for you in red. Notice that it is on the back panel next to the power button.

This is the reset page from your Linksys WRT300N router.

First of all, make sure the router is plugged in and powered on.

Secondly, take a sharp object such as a straightened paperclip or pen and press down on the reset button for approximately 10 seconds. If you don't hold the reset button down long enough you run the risk of simply rebooting it instead of resetting it like you wanted. This will sometimes cause confusion when trying to login using the defaults.

Warning: DO NOT unplug or turn off the router during the reset process. If you do it can cause permanent damage to the router.

Don't forget that this reset erases every single setting you have ever changed in the past. I strongly recommend trying other methods of troubleshooting before you decide to reset the router back to factory defaults.

Login to the Linksys WRT300N

After the Linksys WRT300N router has been reset you will be required to login to it by using the default login information. Not sure what this is? You can find all the information you need to login to your router in our Linksys WRT300N Login Guide.

Tip: Can't login with the defaults? Try resetting the router again but this time hold down the reset button for a little longer to make sure that it properly resets.

Change Your Password

Make sure that you change the router's password from the default as soon as possible. Default passwords are easy to guess which makes them not very secure. Try to make your new password unique. If you need help making a secure password then visit our Choosing a Strong Password guide.

Tip: Want to keep from losing your password? Write it down for future reference on a note and then attach it to the base of the router.
