Setup WiFi on the Mitrastar HGW-2501GN-R2

The Mitrastar HGW-2501GN-R2 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Login To The Mitrastar HGW-2501GN-R2

To get started configuring the Mitrastar HGW-2501GN-R2 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Now that you have finished logging into the Mitrastar HGW-2501GN-R2 router you should see the page above.

To change the WiFi settings you need to click the option of Network Setting. Then choose Wireless 2.4GHz.

On this new page, first you need to make sure there is a checkmark in the box labeled Enable Wireless LAN.

Next, use the box titled Wireless Network Name (SSID) to enter a new name for the network. This is the name you give your network so you can identify it later on. I strongly recommend using no personal or router specific information. Learn how to do this in the How to Change your Wireless Name guide.

If you want to change your channel you can do that next. Use the drop down list labeled Channel Selection to pick your new channel. To avoid slowing your network down I recommend using channels 1,6 or 11 only. Want to know why? Check out my WiFi Channels guide.

Now use the Security Mode drop down list to choose the appropriate option. I strongly recommend using WPA2-PSK. It is the strongest available today. Learn more in our WEP vs. WPA.

Below that is the Pre-Shared Key. This is the Internet password. Use this box to enter a new and strong/complex password. This password needs to be at least 14 to 20 characters in length. For help on creating a good strong password check out the Choosing a Strong Password guide.

That should be all there is to change. Save your changes by clicking the Apply button at the bottom of the screen.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
