Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

You are now on the page you see above. First of all be sure that the box titled enable is checked.

Second, use the drop down list titled Channel to pick the appropriate channels for your network. For the least amount of interference we recommend that everybody uses channels 1,6, or 11. Learn more about this topic in our WiFi Channels Guide.

Next, skip down to the setting titled Network Name (ESSID). This is the name you create in order to differentiate between your network and the others around you. It doesn't really matter what you enter her but we recommend that you avoid personal information. For a more in depth guide read our Wireless Names Guide.

Now locate the setting of Encryption/Security Type. This is the security you use for your network. We recommend the use of WPA2-PSK. This is the most up-to-date security for home networks. For more information on this topic, read our WEP vs. WPA guide.

Below that is the Key (Wireless Password). This is the password you type into a wireless device in order for it to connect to your network. Do not leave this as the default password. Hackers know the defaults and almost always try these first when trying to access a network. Strengthen your password by using a minimum of 14 characters. Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. More information can be found in our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

There is one more setting I want to address. Do not use WPS it is very insecure. Read our What is WPS Guide. Then make sure that the setting titled Enable WPS pushbutton is Disabled.

Once all the changes have been made, click the option of Save.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
