On this new page, use the SSID box to enter a new network name. This name acts as the identification for your network. It doesn't really matter what you enter here but we recommend avoiding personal information such as names or numbers. Check out our guide titled Wireless Names Guide.

Select the correct country from the list next to Region.

Then use the drop down list titled Channel to pick the appropriate channel for your network. Everyone should use a non-overlapping channel, either 1,6, or 11.

The last setting on this page is the Channel Width. We recommend setting this to Automatic.

That's it for this page, just click the Save setting then go back to the left and click Wireless Security.

Scroll down this page and click the radio button labeled WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK.

Below that use the Version drop down list to choose the option of WPA2-PSK. This is the best security option available for home networks right now. Read our WEP vs. WPA guide.

Set the Encryption to AES.

The last setting is titled PSK Password. This is the password you type into any wireless device you want to access your network. It is also used to encrypt your private information while it is being transmitted. This password should be strong. We recommend at least 14-20 characters in length. We also suggest using symbols, and numbers in your password. Learn more about creating strong passwords by reading our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password.

Before you exit, click the Save button.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
