Setup WiFi on the Netgear D6300

The Netgear D6300 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

Use a VPN Instead

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

Login To The Netgear D6300

To get started configuring the Netgear D6300 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.

After you have logged into the Netgear D6300 you begin on the Basic Home page.

From here, click the Advanced tab at the top of the page.

You should now be on the page you see above. Go to the left side of the page and click the link titled Setup. Then click Wireless Setup.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Netgear D6300

Once you are directed to the page you see above, find the box labeled Name (SSID). This is a name you need to create to identify your network. It really doesn't matter what you enter but avoid personal information for your security. We have more information on SSID's in our Wireless Names Guide.

Next is the Channel. There are three channels that everyone should use, they are 1,6, or 11. Learn why in our WiFi Channels Guide.

Below that is the Security Option. For the best security option, click the radio dot labeled WPA2-PSK[AES]. If you want to know the different options available to you, read our WEP vs. WPA Guide.

The last thing you need to enter is the Passphrase. This is the network password. It is very important that you create a strong password here. Learn how to do this in our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

That's all you need to do, just click the green Apply button at the top of the page.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
