Reset the Netgear EVG2000

If you need to reset your Netgear EVG2000 router back to factory settings, then this article shows you how. This is not the same thing as rebooting a router. Every time your router loses power it reboots. Resetting a router erases all settings from it and returns it to factory defaults.

Warning: Before you continue, there are a few things you need to know. A router reset will affect the following settings:

  • The router's login and password are reset to factory defaults.
  • All WiFi settings are reset, including network name and password.
  • Any ISP settings saved in your router will be removed. You may have to contact your ISP.
  • Any port forwards, firewall settings, or parental controls that you have configured will be removed.

Resetting your router should be considered the last step. Make sure that you have tried to recover your router password using our Router Password Finder first.

Reset the Netgear EVG2000

Most of the time you can find a small reset button located on either the back or the bottom of a router. What you are looking for is something that looks like this:

Yours may look slightly different, but they are usually tiny. You may need a paper clip to push the reset button.

Watch the lights on the front of your router and hold the reset button down for about 10 seconds. Notice how the lights on the front of the router are blinking. When the lights do something different, the router is reset. Do not worry about holding the button down too long; this is harmless.

Don't forget, this step will totally reset your Netgear EVG2000 router back to factory settings.

Login to the Netgear EVG2000

Once the reset is complete, you need to login to your router using the default IP address, username, and password. You can follow the EVG2000 Login Guide to find everything that you need to log in.

Change Your Password

After logging in to your router for the first time, you need to change your router's password. Since factory passwords are well known, it's a huge security risk to leave your router set to the default. Tip: Write your new password down on a note and tape it to the bottom of your router for future reference.
