Setup WiFi on the Netgear wgt634u

The Netgear wgt634u router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

Starting on the Router Status page of the Netgear WGT634U click the Wireless Settings link in the left sidebar under Setup.

This takes you to the Wireless Settings page.

The first setting on this page is titled Name (SSID). This is the ID for your network. Be creative but don't use personal information. Check out our guide on this subject titled How to Change your Wireless Name.

Next is the Channel. It is recommended that everyone use channels 1,6, or 11 for the least interference. To learn why, read our WiFi Channels Guide.

Below that is the Security Options. There are three different options here. For maximum security, you should use WPA2-PSK. Unfortunately this router doesn't have this option. We recommend updating your firmware to allow for this option. Check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA for more info.

Once you have done this you need to change your Passphrase. This is the network password and should be strong. We recommend at least 14-20 characters and at least one symbol, number, and capital letter. Take a look at our Choosing a Strong Password Guide for even more help.

That's it, just don't forget to click the Apply button before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
