This brings you to the page you see here. The first setting that should be changed is titled Name (SSID). If you have any wireless devices newer than 2009, we recommend using the Name (11N SSID) space. This is the name you give your network for identification. It doesn't really matter what you enter here but we recommend avoiding personal information. For more on this topic, read our How to Change your Wireless Name Guide.

Now locate the Channel. If you chose 11N above, do so again here. All you need to do in this box is make sure you are using channels 1,6, or 11. These three channels, if used by everyone, cause the least amount of interference. For more on this, read our WiFi Channels Guide.

Below this is the Security Options. Our recommendation is to use WPA2-PSK[AES]. This is the most secure choice available today. Check out our WEP vs. WPA Guide for more info.

The last setting that needs to be changed is titled Passphrase. This is the network password. It is important to create a strong password. Please read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide for ideas on how to create your password. We recommend a minimum of 14-20 characters.

That's all that needs to be done to make your WiFi more secure. Before exiting be sure to click the Apply button.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
