Setup WiFi on the Netgear WNDR4000

The Netgear WNDR4000 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Login To The Netgear WNDR4000

To get started configuring the Netgear WNDR4000 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Netgear WNDR4000

If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.

For the Netgear WNDR4000 router you begin on the Basic Settings page. To configure the WiFi settings, click the option of Wireless Settings in the left sidebar under the main heading of Setup.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Netgear WNDR4000

You are then directed to a page like the image you see above. We recommend that you make all your changes in the section titled Wireless Network(2.4GHz b/g/n).

The first setting is titled Name (SSID). This is your network name and should be unique to you. While it doesn't really matter what you enter here, we recommend avoiding personal information. For more on this topic, read our Wireless Names Guide.

The second setting is called Channel. There are three channels that everyone should be using, be sure you are on channels 1,6, or 11. Find out why in our WiFi Channels Guide.

Next is the Security Options. There are five different options here, we recommend the option of WPA2-PSK[AES]. For a description of your different options, read our WEP vs. WPA Guide.

Finally the last setting is titled Passphrase. This is the password you use to access your network. It's important to create a strong password to secure your network against intruders. We recommend at least 14-20 characters here. Learn more in our Choosing a Strong Password guide.

Click the Apply button to save your changes.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
