You should then be taken to a page like the one you see here. The first setting you should change is the Network Name (SSID). This is your local internet identification and should be unique to you. It's not important what you enter here but we recommend avoiding personal information. Want to learn more? Take a look at this guide.

If you need to change your channel, open the drop down list titled Channel Selection and highlight the channel you wish to use. We recommend that everyone use channels 1,6, or 11. To learn why, read this guide.

Next, scroll down to the Security section. To the right of Encryption, choose the option of Use WPA-PSK Encryption.

Below that is the box titled WPA-PSK Encryption Key. This is the internet password and should not be left as it is. Change this to something much stronger and unique. The longer and more random a password looks, the stronger it is. Actual words should be avoided. Use no less than 14 characters and mix in some symbols, numbers, and capital letters. More ideas can be found in our password guide.

The last setting is titled WPA-PSK Version. For the best security available right now choose WPA2. To learn more about this, read our guide on the subject.

Click the Apply button to save your changes. That's it, you did it.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
