This guide covers how to reset the Amped Wireless TAP-R2 router back to factory defaults. There is a lot of confusion between the terms reset and reboot. When you want to reboot something you want to cycle it's power by turning it off and back on again. Resetting a router is reverting all the settings back to how they were from the factory.
Warning: Resetting your router can cause problems if you don't know what to expect. We recommend making a list of all the settings you know will change. Begin by using the list we created below:
- The router's username and password are reverted to factory defaults.
- The WiFi information such as SSID, password, and security method are returned to factory.
- If you use DSL you need to re-enter the ISP username and password. This information can be obtained by calling your ISP.
- Any other settings that you have changed such as port forwards are erased. These need to be re-configured.

Use a VPN Instead
Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.

The first step in this Amped Wireless TAP-R2 reset process is to locate the reset button. Normally this tiny recessed button is can be found on the back panel or on the underside of the router. We have circled it's location for you in the image below.
Take the end of an unwound paperclip to press and hold the reset button for at least 10 seconds. The Amped Wireless TAP-R2 router needs to be on in order for this to work. Don't unplug or turn off the router during this process as it could cause damage to the router.
Remember this erases all the setting you have made to this router. It's a good idea to try other troubleshooting methods first.

Change Your Password
The next step is to change the default password. It's never a good idea to leave a default password that way. Change this password to something you create. For great ideas and tips check out our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password.
Tip: Write this new password down on a piece of paper and place it somewhere safe. If your router is in a secure location it's okay to attach it to the bottom of the router so you don't lose it.
Setup WiFi on the Amped Wireless TAP-R2
The last thing we will discuss in this guide is the WiFi settings. Don't forget these too have been reset and need your attention. Some router manufacturers like to leave the security open as the default. This means your network has no security by default. We strongly recommend making sure you have the security mode of WPA2-PSK. If you need instructions for this check out our guide titled How to Setup WiFi on the Amped Wireless TAP-R2.
