This guide is about how to reset the Arris DG1670 router. Resetting a router is different than rebooting a router. Rebooting is cycling the power by turning it off and back on again. Resetting a router is erasing all the changes you have ever made to the device and reverting the machine back to factory settings.
Warning: Resetting your router can cause problems if you are unaware of what has been changed. Please take the following into consideration before continuing.
- The main router username and password are reset.
- The WiFi username and password are reset.
- If you use a DSL connection the ISP (Internet Service Provider) username and password need to be re-entered
- All changes you have made previous to this reset are erased. This could include port forwards, IP address changes, or firewall settings.

Use a VPN
Have you considered using a VPN when you connect to the internet? A VPN is a great way to increase your security and anonymity while surfing.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes securely sharing your home network super simple. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.
First of all make sure the Arris DG1670 router is on. If the router gets switched off or unplugged during the reset process it could permanently damage the device.
Next locate the tiny reset button. For this Arris DG1670 router take a look at the back panel. We have circled the placement of the reset button in the image below.
Take a pin or tip of a pencil to press and hold the reset button for about 10 seconds.
Remember that this is going to erase all of your configurations you've made to personalize this router. Make sure you have tried other troubleshooting methods first.
Login to the Arris DG1670
Now that you have successfully logged into the Arris DG1670 router you need to login using the factory default username and password. We have these included for you in our Arris DG1670 Login Guide.
Change Your Password
Next we recommend changing your router's default password to something you create. This could be just about anything you like. Since it can be difficult to come up with a new password we have created a Choosing a Strong Password guide.
Tip: Write this new password down on a piece of paper and attach it to the bottom of the router for future reference.
Setup WiFi on the Arris DG1670
The last setting we recommend you change is the WiFi security. Router companies sometimes set the security default to open or disabled. This means anyone could use your Internet if they are in range of your WiFi with or without your permission. We recommend changing this to WPA2-PSK. We have instructions on how to do this in our How to Setup WiFi on the Arris DG1670 router.
Don't forget to sign up for NordVPN's promo deal before it's gone.
