This guide covers how to reset the Arris TG862G router to factory defaults. There is confusion on the difference between resetting a router and rebooting a router. To reboot a router requires turning it off and back on again to cycle the power. Resetting a router has many more consequences as it reverts all previous configurations to factory defaults.

Warning: Resetting this router erases everything you have ever done to the router. Don't try this until you have exhausted other troubleshooting methods. Please consider the following:

  • The router's main password and username are reset.
  • The WiFi username and password are reset as well.
  • If you use a DSL connection you need to re-enter the ISP (Internet Service Provider) username and password. Call your ISP for this information.
  • All configurations are erased. This could include IP address changes or maybe port forwards for a favorite program.

Change Your Password

Now you need to change this password to something you come up with. Sometimes it can be difficult coming up with strong passwords. We have created a guide full of ideas and helpful hints on the topic. Check out our Choosing a Strong Password guide.

Tip: After creating this new password you need to write it down on a sticky-note and attach it to the bottom of the router for future reference.

Setup WiFi on the Arris TG862G

The last setting we recommend you change is the Arris TG862G WiFi security. This will have been reset as well. Some router manufacturers like to leave the security disabled as the default. This means anyone can access your network without your permission. Change the security mode to WPA2-PSK. This will require an Internet password as well. For instructions on how to do this check out our How to Setup WiFi on the Arris TG862G guide.
