This guide is about how to reset the Arris WTM552G router to factory defaults. Resetting a device is often confused with rebooting. Rebooting is simply recycling the power by turning it off and back on again. Resetting a router has more consequences. A reset causes the entire router to revert back to factory settings.
Warning: Resetting your router should be done with caution. Please consider the following things before continuing.
- A reset causes the router main username and password to be reset.
- The WiFi security, SSID, and password will all be reset.
- If you use a DSL connection you will need to enter the ISP username and password again. If you are unsure what these are, call your ISP.
- All configurations such as port forwards, IP address changes, and firewall settings are erased. All of these will need to be re-entered.

Use a VPN Instead
Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.
First of all you need to be sure your Arris WTM552G router is switched on. Do not turn your router off or unplug it during the reset process. This could cause permanent damage to your router.
Now pinpoint the tiny reset button on your router. This is normally found on the back panel of your router. Go ahead and take a look at the image below.
There are two reset buttons on this router. To reset the router to factory defaults, it is the top one we have circled in red. Using the tip of a pencil or pen press and hold the reset button for about 10 seconds.
Remember that this erases everything you have ever done to your router. Make sure you have exhausted other methods of troubleshooting before you continue.
Login to the Arris WTM552G
After you finish resetting the Arris WTM552G router you need to login using the factory default username and password. We have found these for you and included them in our Login Guide for the Arris WTM552G router.
Change Your Password
Replace that default password with something new. Default passwords can be extremely easy to find. Don't let accessing your router from someone outside your network circle be that easy. Sometimes coming up with a new password is difficult. For helpful ideas and hints check out this Choosing a Strong Password guide.
Tip: You should write this new password down somewhere. If you are anything like me it needs to be near the router. Go ahead and attach it to the bottom of the router if you need to. Normally only authorized people are going to be that close to your router anyway.
Setup WiFi on the Arris WTM552G
The last setting we ask that you change as soon as possible is the WiFi security. A lot of router companies leave the router security wide open as the default. This is not a good idea. We highly recommend changing your network security to WPA2-PSK for the best security available right now. This will also include a password. If you need more instructions about the WiFi setup check out the How to Setup WiFi on the Arris WTM552G guide.
