WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Belkin F9J1102

This is the wifi channel page from your Belkin F9J1102 router.

There are two columns on this page on the left is 2.4GHz and on the right is 5GHz. If you are unsure of which to fill in, we suggest filling in 2.4GHz. Only if all your wireless devices were made after 2012 should you use 5GHz. Older devices won't work on 5GHz.

In the appropriate column use the drop down list next to Wireless Channel to choose the channel you want to use. Everyone should be on channel 1,6, or 11. These three channels are the most you can get out of the spectrum without overlapping. Overlapping channels causes a lot of interference. However completely sharing a channel does not due to channel sharing software within the router. Be sure you are on channel 1,6, or 11. If you want more information on this topic, check out our guide titled WiFi channels.

You also need to change the SSID on this page. The SSID is the name you give your network so you can identify when needed. Create a unique name here, but don't use any personal information. For more on this topic, look at our guide titled Wireless names.

That's it on this page, just click the Apply Changes, then in the left sidebar, click the link titled Security.

You should now be on a page that looks very similar to the one above. The first thing you should change is the Security Mode. Use the drop-down list to choose the option of WPA/WPA2-Personal(PSK). For more on the different security modes available, check out our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.

Next is the Authentication. This is narrowing down your choice above even further. Pick WPA2-PSK.

The last thing you need to change in order to have a more secure WiFi network is the Pre-Shared Key (PSK). This is the password you use when you access your WiFi network. We strongly recommend that you use at least 20 characters in your password. Avoid using personal information, this is easier to guess. Don't use any words that are found in a dictionary, these are easier to crack due to dictionary programs. Do use symbols, capital letters, and numbers in your password. Read our guide, Choosing a strong password to learn more.

Finally, click the Apply Changes button and you are done!

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
