router IP address lan home network
This is the lan page from your BT 2700HGV router.

On this page, find the Network section. In the box labeled Network Name (SSID) enter the name you want to use to identify your network. Don't use personal information in this name. Click the link, Wireless names for more information.

If you want to hide this network name you have just created, uncheck the box next to SSID Broadcast. Understand that while this may hide your name from scanning wireless devices, a hacker can still find hidden networks fairly easily.

Below that is the Wireless Channel. This is the channel that you use to transmit your data on. If you are not receiving the reception you think you should, try changing the channel. Be sure that when you do you use channel 1,6, or 11. Everyone should be using one of these three channels if they have neighbors. To understand why, click the link titled WiFi Channels.

Now drop down to the Security section. First, make sure that the Default: Enabled box is marked next to Wireless Security.

The Authentication Type should be set to WPA2-PSK. For more information on why, click the link titled WEP vs. WPA.

Next is the Wireless Key. Check the dot labeled Use custom encryption key. This should be under the picture. In the box next to that, enter the password you want to use when you access your network. This password should be at least 20 characters. Use symbols, numbers, and capital letters. Don't use any personal information. Don't use any real words that can be found in a dictionary. For more on this topic, read our guide titled Choosing a strong password.

That's all there is to it, simply click the Save button at the bottom of the page before you exit.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
