This guide shows you how to reset the Buffalo WZR2-G300N router back to factory defaults. This is not the same thing as a router reboot. A reboot is a way of cycling the power to the device. This is done by removing the power to the device, waiting about 30 seconds, and then plugging the power back in to the device. A router reset is taking all the settings and returning them to factory defaults.

Warning: Resetting a router can cause more problems for you if you don't understand what settings are changed. We recommend making a list of settings you know will be changed by this reset. We have started that list for you:

  1. The router's main username and password.
  2. The Internet name and password.
  3. The ISP username and password if you use DSL. Call your ISP for more information if you need more information.
  4. Have you made any other changes to your router? Anything you have changed needs to be reconfigured.

Use a VPN Instead

Have you considered using a VPN instead of forwarding a port? For most users, a VPN is a much simpler and more secure choice than forwarding a port.

We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes forwarding a port no longer necessary for most applications. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.

When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:

  • Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
  • Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
  • Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
  • Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
  • Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.

This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.

Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.

NordVPN faster than ever deal!

Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.

Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.

The first thing you have to know in order to reset your router is the location of the reset button. For this model it is located on the back panel of the device. See the image below for reference.

router reset factory settings
This is the reset page from your Buffalo WZR2-G300N router.

This button is actually recessed into the panel making it difficult to accidentally reset this button. Take the tip of a sharpened pencil or pen and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. If you don't hold this button down for the required amount of time it may only reboot the system instead of resetting it like you wanted.

Remember this will erase every setting you have ever changed on this device. To avoid having to lose all your previously configured settings you should try other troubleshooting methods first.

Login to the Buffalo WZR2-G300N

The next step is to login to your device in order to make the necessary changes. To login you will need to know the default IP address, username, and password. We have already found this information for you and included it in our Buffalo WZR2-G300N Login Guide.

Change Your Password

Now it's a good idea to change the default password. Default passwords are meant to be easy to guess or crack. You should change this as soon as you login for the first time. If you need help with this check out our Choosing a Strong Password guide.

Tip: Write this new password down on a piece of paper and attach it to the bottom of the device if you keep this router in a fairly secure location such as your home.

Setup WiFi on the Buffalo WZR2-G300N

It's important that now you check on the WiFi settings of your router. This includes the network name, the Internet password, and the security method. We highly recommend using WPA2 with a strong password. For a detailed guide on the wireless settings, check out our How to Setup WiFi on the Buffalo WZR2-G300N.
