You are now on the Wireless Settings page. First, click the On choice next to Wireless Radio.

Second you need to change the default Network ID(SSID). This is a name you give your network so that you can distinguish it from the others around you. Go ahead and name it anything you want, but avoid personal information. To learn more about the SSID, read our Wireless Names Guide.

Next is the Channel. This needs to be set to channel 1,6, or 11. To learn why everyone should be using these three channels, read our WiFi Channels Guide.

After that is the Security. There are several different choices here. Learn the differences in these options by reading our WEP vs. WPA Guide. Our recommendation is the option of WPA-PSK. An even better option would be to update your firmware version to allow for the option of WPA2-PSK.

You should now be asked for a Passphrase. This is the password you are to use to gain access to your wireless network. We recommend using 14-20 characters. Include some symbols, numbers, and capital letters. To learn more about this, read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

When you are done, click the Apply button before exiting.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
