WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.

You are then directed to a page similar to the one above. Tick the button in about the middle of the page labeled Manual Wireless Network Setup.

This takes you to a new page, that unfortunately we do not have the screenshot for. On this new page, use the box titled Wireless Network Name to enter a name you create. This new name is how you will identify your network. When creating this name, avoid using personal information. To learn more, read our Wireless Names Guide.

Now find the Wireless Channel. Be sure you are on channel 1,6, or 11. These three channels are the most you can get out of the spectrum without overlapping. Overlapping channels cause a lot of interference. To learn more about channels, read our WiFi Channels Guide.

Now scroll down the page until you come to the Security Mode. The best option here is WPA-Personal. To learn why, read our guide titled WEP vs. WPA Guide.

Below that is the WPA Mode. Choose WPA2 Only.

Next is the Cipher Type. Choose between TKIP and AES. We recommend AES because it is considered more secure than TKIP.

The last thing you need to change is the Pre-Shared Key. This is the password you are to use to gain access to your network. This password should be strong, at least 20 characters. It should contain at least one symbol, number, and capital letter. It should not contain any personal information or words. To learn how to create a random looking password that is memorable, read our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password.

Click Save Settings at the top of the window to save your changes.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
