In this guide I will be explaining how to reset the Dlink DIR-300NRU router back to factory defaults. Before I do this I want to explain the difference between a reset and a reboot. When I reboot a router I am cycling the power to the device. This is often done to solve a minor problems with the router. When I reset a router every single setting I have ever changed is erased and put back to factory defaults.
Warning: Resetting a router is a big step. Every setting you have ever changed is erased. My recommendation is to make a list of settings you know will be changed. Consider the following:
- The router's main username and password are reverted back to factory defaults.
- The Internet name and password are also erased and put back to how they were from the factory.
- If you use a DSL router you need to re-enter the ISP username and password. To find out what these are you need to call your local Internet Service Provider.
- Any other changes you have made such as port forwards or simple IP address changes are erased.

Use a VPN
Have you considered using a VPN when you connect to the internet? A VPN is a great way to increase your security and anonymity while surfing.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes securely sharing your home network super simple. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.
The first step is to locate the reset button. This tiny pin hole style of button is found on the back panel of the device. Take a look at the image below. I have circled the reset button in red.
Take an unwound paperclip or other similar object and press down on the tiny button for about 10 seconds. This begins the reset process. If you don't hold the button down for long enough you end up only rebooting the router. This can cause a lot of confusion.
Remember a complete factory reset erases every single setting you have ever changed on your device. If you want to try and avoid this you need to try other troubleshooting methods.
Login to the Dlink DIR-300NRU
Now that you've reset the Dlink DIR-300NRU router you'll need to log into it. This is done by using the factory default username and password. Don't know where to get these? We have them provided for you in our Login Guide.
Tip: If the defaults aren't logging you in it could be because the reset button wasn't held down for long enough.
Change Your Password
After logging into your router we suggest setting a new password for it. Keep in mind that this password only protects your router settings and not your wireless network. All the same, it's always a good idea to set a strong password. For help in doing so check out our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.
Tip: Prevent yourself from losing your new password by writing it on a note and taping it to the underside of your router.
Setup WiFi on the Dlink DIR-300NRU
Now is the time to check on the wireless settings. This includes the SSID, the Internet password, and the security type. We recommend using WPA2 with a strong password for your network. Check out our How to Setup WiFi on the Dlink DIR-300NRU router.
