Setup WiFi on the Dlink DIR-862L

The Dlink DIR-862L router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

Login To The Dlink DIR-862L

Find the WiFi Settings on the Dlink DIR-862L

This wireless setup guide begins on the DEVICE INFORMATION page of the Dlink DIR-862L router. To start configuring your wireless settings, click the SETUP near the top of the page. Then click WIRELESS SETUP on the left hand side of the page.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Dlink DIR-862L

Click the button labeled Manual Wireless Connection Setup.

On this new page, start by making sure you're on the 2.4GHz Band.

Then click the box labeled Enable Wireless.

After that you'll need to set a Wireless Network Name. This can be anything you want, however we strongly recommend that you avoid any sort of personal information. For more info take a look at our Wireless Names Guide.

Make sure the box labeled Enable Auto Channel Scan is unchecked. Set the Wireless Channel to either 1, 6, or 11. To learn why these are the best options see our WiFi Channels Guide.

Now make sure the Security Mode is set to WPA-Personal. Then, below that, set the WPA Mode to WPA2 only. This will give you the strongest security. Why? Read our WEP vs. WPA Guide to find out.

Be sure that the Cipher Type is set to AES.

Lastly, in the box marked Pre-Shared Key, enter your desired network password. This can be whatever you like, however keep in mind that a strong password is 14-20 characters long and avoids any sort of personal information. For more helpful tips check out our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

That's it! You're done. Just be sure to save your settings before closing the page.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
