With this page I will be showing you how to correctly reset the Dlink DIR-880L router back to it's original factory defaults. It needs to be mentioned that this is nothing like a reboot. When I refer to a reboot I am speaking of a cycle in the power to the device. When I refer to a reset I am speaking of a complete factory restore of all settings inside the router's interface. This means every setting you have ever changed is erased and replaced with the original factory defaults.

Warning: Resetting a router is a big step and should not be taken lightly. Things to consider are:

  • The main username and password used to access your router's user interface are erased and replaced with the factory defaults.
  • The Internet name and password are reverted to factory defaults.
  • If you have a DSL type router you need to re-enter the ISP or Internet Service Provider username and password. Call your ISP for the details.
  • Have you ever made any other changes to your router? These are erased and need to be setup again after the reset.

Reset the Dlink DIR-880L

The first step in a reset is to know where that tiny little button is. For this model of router you can find it on the bottom panel of the unit.

This is the reset page from your Dlink DIR-880L router.

Take the tip of a sharp pencil and press the reset button down for about 10 seconds. If you don't hold this button down for long enough you end up only rebooting the device instead of the desired reset.

Make sure you know this is going to erase every single setting you have ever changed on the device. To avoid this you need to try other methods fixing your problem.

Login to the Dlink DIR-880L

Following that you'll need to log into your Dlink DIR-880L router. Do this by using the factory default username and password. These are provided for you in our Login Guide.

Tip: Defaults not logging you in? It could be because the reset button wasn't held for long enough.

Change Your Password

After resetting and logging into your router we recommend setting a new password for it. Remember that this password will only protect your router settings, not your wireless network. However, setting a strong password is always a good idea. For help in doing so be sure to visit our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

Tip: To keep from losing your new password try writing it on a note and attaching it to the underside of your router.
