On this page I will be showing you how to reset the Dlink DNS-120 network storage adapter back to factory default settings. This is not the same thing as a reboot. When you reboot something you cycle the power to the device. When you reset a a device you take all the settings and return every one of them back to factory settings. This means every single setting you have ever changed is erased and returned to it's original factory defaults.
Warning: Be careful when you reset this unit. Things you may not have considered are:
- The storage adapter's main username and password are erased and replaced with the original factory defaults.
- Any folder or FTP settings you have changed are erased. These will all need to be reconfigured after the reset is complete.

Reset the Dlink DNS-120
The first step in a reset is to know where the reset button is located on this storage adapter. For this model you can find it on the back panel. I have circled it's location for you in the image below.
Take the end of a straightened paperclip and press the reset button for about 10 seconds to begin the reset process. If you don't hold this button down for long enough you may end up only rebooting the adapter instead of resetting it.
Remember this reset erases all settings you have ever made to this storage adapter. I recommend trying other options of fixing the problem you are having before you decide to reset this unit.
Login to the Dlink DNS-120
After resetting your Dlink DNS-120 storage adapter you'll need to log into it. Do this by using the default username and password. These can be found in our Login Guide.
Tip: Defaults not logging you in it could be because the reset button wasn't held down for long enough.
Change Your Password
Following that we suggest setting a new password for it. This can be whatever you want, however remember that a strong password consists of no personal information and is 14-20 characters in length. For more help check out our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.
Tip: Avoid losing your new password by writing it on a note and attaching it to the underside of the device.
