This takes you to a page like the one you see here. First use the Wireless Network Name (SSID) drop-down menu to choose the option of Enter Manually. Then, to the right of that, enter a new network name. This name is the name you create to identify your local network. Don't use personal information here because it can be seen by your neighbors. To learn more about this topic, read our guide by clicking this link.

Next, choose the Security Mode. The best choice here is WPA2. Read our guide on the differences for more information, WEP vs. WPA.

A new box should appear at this point asking for the Cipher Type. This is the style of encryption you plan on using. We recommend the more secure option of AES.

The last box is called PSK. This is the password you will use to gain access to your wireless network. We recommend at least 14-20 characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols in it. To learn how to create a strong and memorable password, read our guide on this subject by clicking this link.

Finally, click the Save button when you are finished.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
