Configure your Computer to Have a Static IP Address

Port forwarding the Dlink DSL-2730U to your computer can be more reliable if you first configure a static IP address on your computer. We have instructions to setup a static IP address for Windows 7, Windows 8, and a variety of other devices on our Static IP Address Settings page.

Please note that while setting up a static IP address on your computer is optional, it is still a very good idea to go ahead and do it. In the long run it will make your port forward much more reliable.

Login To The Dlink DSL-2730U

To get started forwarding a port you need to login to your Dlink DSL-2730U router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Forward a Port on the Dlink DSL-2730U router

Find The Port Forwarding Section of the Dlink DSL-2730U

Beginning on the Device Info page of the Dlink DSL-2730U, click the Advanced Setup link on the left hand side of the page. Then, below that tick NAT, then Virtual Servers.

Configure the Port Forwarding section of your Dlink DSL-2730U

Now to forward a port, make the following changes:

This takes you to a page like the one you see above. In the center section of this page, tick Add.

You are then directed another page, click the radio button labeled Custom Service, and enter the name of the program you are forwarding these ports to in the available box. This is not mandatory but for your future reference.

In the Server IP Address space, enter the computer's internal IP address that you are forwarding these ports to. If you don't know how to find the computer's local IP address, What is my IP Address is our guide on the subject.

To forward a single port, enter that number in the External Port Start box, then External Port End box, next is Internal Port Start box, and finally, Internal Port End box. If you want to forward a range of ports, like 50-100, enter the lowest number in the External Port Start box, and Internal Port Start box. Enter the highest number of the range in the External Port End, and Internal Port End.

Next is the Protocol. Use this drop down menu to choose the type of protocol you want to use while forwarding these ports.

Finally, click the Apply/Save button.

That's it, you're finished!

Test if Your Ports are Open

Now that you have forwarded ports on the Dlink DSL-2730U you should test to see if your ports are forwarded correctly.
