Configure your Computer to Have a Static IP Address

Port forwarding the Dlink DSL-2740B to your computer can be more reliable if you first configure a static IP address on your computer. We have instructions to setup a static IP address for Windows 7, Windows 8, and a variety of other devices on our Static IP Address Settings page.

Please note that while setting up a static IP address on your computer is optional, it is still a very good idea to go ahead and do it. In the long run it will make your port forward much more reliable.

Login To The Dlink DSL-2740B

Forward a Port on the Dlink DSL-2740B router

Find The Port Forwarding Section of the Dlink DSL-2740B

You start on the Interface Setup page of the Dlink DSL-2740B To forward a port, or ports like, 80-100, click the link labeled Advanced at the top of the page. A new set of choices should now be on the left side of the page. Pick the link on the left labeled Port Forwarding.

Configure the Port Forwarding section of your Dlink DSL-2740B

Now to forward a port, make the following changes:

  • First, type the name of the program you are forwarding these ports for in the Name box. This isn't mandatory, but we suggest it for your future reference.
  • Underneath that is the IP Address. Enter the internal IP address of the specific computer you are forwarding these ports to. What is my IP Address is our guide on how to find your computer's internal IP address.
  • Next, if the type of protocol you need to use is TCP then enter the ports you are forwarding in the External Port TCP box, and the Internal Port TCP box. If you are forwarding ports using UDP enter the ports in the appropriate boxes under UDP. If you are unsure, you can go ahead and enter the ports in all four boxes, both UDP and TCP. Enter the ports as a list, 1,2,3, or a range 1-5, or both, 1,4,6,8-10.
  • Click the Save/Apply button, when you are finished.

Test if Your Ports are Open

Now that you have forwarded ports on the Dlink DSL-2740B you should test to see if your ports are forwarded correctly.
