On this page I will be showing you how to reset the Dlink DVG-N5402SP router back to the original factory defaults. A reset is not the same thing as a reboot. When I use the word reboot I am referring to a cycle in the power to the unit. When I use the word reset I am referring to a complete factory restore of all settings.

Warning: Resetting this router is a big step and should not be taken lightly. A reset causes all settings you have ever changed to be erased. We recommend making a list of all the settings you know about that you have changed in the lifetime of this router. Settings you need to consider are:

  • The router's main access username and password are erased and returned to factory defaults.
  • The Internet name and password are erased and returned to factory defaults.
  • If this is a DSL router you need to re-enter the ISP (Internet Service Provider) username and password.
  • Have you ever made any other changes to your device? This could be anything from a IP address to a port forward... Write it all down so you can reconfigure them after the reset is finished.

Reset the Dlink DVG-N5402SP

With the router on take a straightened paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. This begins the reset process. Be careful that you don't simply press and release the reset button. This usually only reboots the device instead of resetting it.

Please remember that a reset like the one you are about to preform is erasing every single setting you have ever changed on the device. If you want to avoid this you should try other ways of fixing your problem before deciding a reset is what you want.

Login to the Dlink DVG-N5402SP

Once you've reset your Dlink DVG-N5402SP router you'll need to log into it. Do this by using the factory default username and password. Not sure where you can find these? Not to worry. We have them provided for you in our Login Guide.

Tip: If the defaults aren't logging you in it might be because the default button wasn't held down for long enough.

Change Your Password

Now that you've logged into your router we recommend setting a new password for it. This can be whatever you like, however keep in mind that this password will only protect your router settings, not your wireless network. Still, setting a strong password is always a good idea. For help in doing so be sure to check out our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

Tip: Afraid of losing your new password? Try writing it on a note and taping it to the underside of your router.
