On this page I will be showing you how to reset the Dlink DWL-2000AP router back to it's original factory default settings. A reset is not the same thing as a reboot. When I use the word reboot I am referring to a cycle in the power to the unit. When I use the word reset I am referring to a complete factory restore of all settings. This means every setting you have changed in the past is erased and returned to factory defaults.
Warning: Resetting the router can cause more problems for you if you don't know what settings are changed and what ones are not. We recommend making a list of all the different settings you have changed in the past. Consider the following as you create this list.
- The router's main username and password associated with the interface settings are erased and reverted back to factory defaults.
- The Internet name and password are also reverted back to factory defaults.
- If you use a DSL router you need to re-enter the ISP (Internet Service Provider) username and password. Call your local ISP for the details.
- If you have made any other changes, such as a port forward or IP address change, they are erased and returned to the original factory defaults.

Use a VPN
Have you considered using a VPN when you connect to the internet? A VPN is a great way to increase your security and anonymity while surfing.
We use and recommend NordVPN because not only is it the fastest VPN, it includes a new feature called Meshnet that makes securely sharing your home network super simple. With NordVPN Meshnet, you can connect to your devices from anywhere in the world, completely secure, over a highly encrypted VPN tunnel.
When shopping for a VPN, make sure that they meet the following criteria:
- Your VPN provider should have a no-logs policy. This means that they do not keep any logs of any kind.
- Make sure that your VPN provider has lots of exit nodes all around the world.
- Check that your VPN will not affect your speed.
- Verify that your VPN provider uses WireGuard as the underlying protocol.
- Many people prefer a VPN provider that is not based in the United States.
This is the list of requirements that we used when we were shopping around for a VPN provider. There are lots of free, shady VPN providers out there that we looked at and dismissed.
Based in Panama, using diskless servers, and with over 6,100 servers in 61 countries, we can safely say that NordVPN satisfies all of these requirements.
Once you've set up your NordVPN account on multiple computers and enabled Meshnet, you can seamlessly access all of your devices as if they were on the same network. You don't even have to log in to your router. It's very simple.
Every time you click on one of our affiliate links, such as NordVPN, we get a little kickback for introducing you to the service. Think of us as your VPN wingman.
Once you decide you want to go forward with a reset you need to locate the reset button on the outside of the device. I have found an image of the reset button for you.
With the router on, take a bent paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 5 seconds. This starts the reset process. Sometimes simply pressing and releasing the reset button causes a reboot instead of a reset so be aware.
Don't forget that this reset is erasing every single setting you have ever changed on your device. If you want to avoid this loss you need to try other methods of troubleshooting before you continue with a reset.
Login to the Dlink DWL-2000AP
After you've successfully reset the Dlink DWL-2000AP router you'll need to log into it. This is done by using the factory default username and password listed for your use in our Login Guide.
Tip: If the defaults aren't working for you it could be because the reset button wasn't held down for long enough.
Change Your Password
Once you've logged into your router we strongly suggest setting a new password for it. This can be anything you want, however bear in mind that this password will only protect your router settings, not your wireless network. Still, setting a strong password is always a wise choice. For help in doing so check out our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.
Tip: Afraid you'll lose your new password? Try writing it on a sticky note and attaching it to the bottom of your router.
