This takes you to a page like the one you see here. First, change the SSID. This is referring to the name you give your WiFi network so that you can identify it later on. Go ahead and have fun creating a name that you will remember, but avoid personal info such as names. This name can be seen by others. To learn more about this topic, click the following link, The Wireless Names Guide.

If you want to hide your WiFi name you just created, choose Disable from the drop down menu next to SSID Broadcast. Remember that choosing to hide your SSID does not mean you are completely hidden. With the right program a hacker can still find your network with relative ease.

Next is the Channel. Of the 11 to 14 available channels there is only room for up to three that don't overlap, which causes a lot of interference. Be sure you are on one of these non-overlapping channels, 1,6, or 11. To learn more about these three channels, read our WiFi Channels guide.

Set the Authentication to WPA2-Personal. Click this link to learn more.

At this point, you should be asked for a Passphrase. This is the password you use to gain access to your local network. We recommend using 14-20 characters with a mix of numbers, symbols, and letters. To learn how to create a strong and memorable password, read our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password.

When you are finished, click the button near the bottom of the page labeled Apply.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
