Change the SSID first. This is the name you give your wireless network so that you can identify it later on. Be creative with this name but avoid personal information. To learn more about this, read our Wireless Names Guide.

Next is the Channel. Set this channel to 1,6, or 11. If you want to know why we recommend these three channels, read our WiFi Channels Guide.

Below that is the Authentication. The best option here is WPA-PSK. If you update your firmware you can get an even better security of WPA2-PSK. Read our WEP vs. WPA Guide for more information.

At this point you should be asked for a Passphrase. This is the password you use to access your network. Don't user personal information here. We recommend using at least 14-20 characters with a mix of numbers, letters, and symbols. To learn more, read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

When you are finished, click the option near the bottom labeled Apply.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
