The Edimax AR-7284WnA router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.
Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.
Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.
An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.
Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.
You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.
To get started configuring the Edimax AR-7284WnA WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.
To login to the Edimax AR-7284WnA, follow our Edimax AR-7284WnA Login Guide.
If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.
This guide begins on the Setup page of the Edimax AR-7284WnA router. From there, choose the Wireless Setup choice on the left side of the page. Now choose the Wireless Basic option under that.
On this new page, change the Wireless Network Name (SSID) to a name of your choosing. It doesn't really matter what you enter here but we recommend avoiding personal information. Read more by clicking this link.
For the Wireless Channel make sure you are on channel 1,6, or 11. These three channels should be used by everyone. To learn why, read our WiFi Channels Guide.
Click the Apply button when you are finished.
Now click Wireless Security in the left sidebar.
This takes you to the page you see above.
For the strongest security use the Security Mode drop down menu to choose WPA2 Only.
You should now be asked for a Pre-Shared Key. This is the password you use to access your network. Create a password of at least 14 characters. We recommend using some symbols, numbers, and letters in this password. For more on this topic, read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.
That's all there is to it, don't forget to Apply your changes.
After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
