The Edimax AR-7286WnA router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.
Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.
Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.
An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.
Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.
You should almost definitely pick WPA2 for your networks encryption. If you are unsure, be sure to read our WEP vs WPA guide first.
To get started configuring the Edimax AR-7286WnA WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.
To login to the Edimax AR-7286WnA, follow our Edimax AR-7286WnA Login Guide.
If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.
Once you have finished logging into the Edimax AR-7286WnA router you should begin on the home page. To setup the wireless you need to click the option at the top of the page labeled Interface Setup. Then below that in red choose the option of Wireless.
This brings you to the page you see here. The first setting that may need your attention is the Channel. If you want to change the channel you need to choose the Manual option next to Channel. Then to the right of that enter in the channel number you want to use. We strongly recommend using channels 1,6, or 11 only. Find out why in our guide titled WiFi Channels.
In the heading titled Multiple SSIDs Settings you may be told to just use WPS. We strongly recommend reading our What is WPS guide before you decide to use it.
Now you need to set the security of your local network. Find the box labeled SSID. This is the wireless network and should be unique to you. Learn more in our guide about wireless names.
Directly below that is the Authentication Type. We recommend using WPA2-PSK. This is the strongest form of security. To learn more read our WEP vs. WPA guide.
Go ahead and set the Encryption to AES.
Finally the last setting you need to change is the Pre-Shared Key. This is the Internet password. It is important that this be a strong password. Learn how to do this in our Choosing a Strong Password guide.
That's it, just don't forget to save your changes before you leave this page.
After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
