Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

On this new page, use the ESSID box to enter a new name for your network. This name identifies your network from the others around you. It doesn't matter what you enter here but we recommend avoiding personal information as it can potentially be seen by your neighbors. Read our Wireless Names Guide for more on this topic.

Just below this is the Channel Number. You can change this channel if you need to. To do so, use the drop down list and select the channel you want. We recommend using either channel 1,6, or 11. If you want to know why it is important to use one of these three channels, read our WiFi Channels Guide.

Tick the Apply button when you are finished. Then, in the left sidebar, tick the option titled Security Settings.

The first setting on this page is the Encryption. There should be four different choices in this box. Our recommendation is WPA per-shared key. To read more on this topic, read our WEP vs. WPA Guide.

Next is the WPA Unicast Cipher Suite. This is a complicated way of asking you which type of WPA encryption you wish to use. Our recommendation is the bullet marked WPA2(AES). This is the newest and most secure form of WPA.

Below that is the setting called Pre-shared Key Format. Choose Passphrase from the drop down list.

The last thing you need to do is change the Pre-shared Key. This is the password you use to grant access to your local network. This password not only protects against unwanted access but also is used in the encryption method. This password should be strong for your safety. We recommend a 14-20 character minimum with a mix of symbols, numbers, and letters. It may seem daunting to create such a long and crazy looking password but it's easier than you might think. Check out our Choosing a Strong Password Guide.

That's it, just don't forget to click the Apply button so these changes go into effect.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
