Setup WiFi on the Hawking HWRN2

The Hawking HWRN2 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Name

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

Encryption

Login To The Hawking HWRN2

To get started configuring the Hawking HWRN2 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Hawking HWRN2

If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.

After you have finished logging into the Hawking HWRN2 router you should see the home page.

To setup the wireless settings you first need to click the option in the left sidebar labeled Wireless Network.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Hawking HWRN2

You should see a box like the one above. On this page simply click the Enable option next to Wireless Module.

Then click Apply.

Click the Go Back button.

Then in the left sidebar click the option of Basic Settings under Wireless Network.

On this page the first setting, Mode, can be left at Wireless Access Point.

We recommend leaving the Band at 2.4GHz (B+G+N).

Next is the SSID. This is the network name you use to identify your network. Create a unique name here. Learn more about SSIDs in our wireless names guide.

If you want to change the Channel you would do that here. Simply use the channel drop down list and pick the new channel you want to use. We recommend using channels 1,6 or 11 to avoid partial overlap. Learn more in our WiFi Channels guide.

Click the Apply button at the bottom of the page.

Click Go Back.

In the left sidebar click the option of Security Settings under the heading of Wireless Network.

On this new page, use the Fragment Threshold drop down menu to choose the type of security you want to use. We recommend using WPA Pre-Shared Key.

Below that in the WPA Unicast Cipher Suite choose the option of WPA2(AES). Find out why this is the strongest option in our WEP vs. WPA guide.

Finally you need to enter a new Internet password. You do that in the box labeled Pre-Shared Key. Create a strong and complex password here. This password should have at least 14 characters in it. Find helpful tips in our Choosing a Strong Password guide.

Click Apply near the bottom of the page.

Click Apply one more time in this box. This saves and applies all your changes. It will then reboot the Hawking HWRN2 router.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
