Setup WiFi on the Huawei E586

The Huawei E586 router is considered a wireless router because it offers WiFi connectivity. WiFi, or simply wireless, allows you to connect various devices to your router, such as wireless printers, smart televisions, and WiFi enabled smartphones.

WiFi Terms

Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Your wireless network needs to have a name to uniquely identify it from other wireless networks. If you are not sure what this means we have a guide explaining what a wireless name is that you can read for more information.

Login To The Huawei E586

To get started configuring the Huawei E586 WiFi settings you need to login to your router. If you are already logged in you can skip this step.

Find the WiFi Settings on the Huawei E586

If you followed our login guide above then you should see this screen.

Starting on the Device Information page of the Huawei E586 router click the option in the left sidebar labeled WLAN. This opens a new set of choices. Pick the one labeled WLAN Basic Settings.

Change the WiFi Settings on the Huawei E586

You should now be on the page you see here. In the box labeled Name (SSID) enter the name you want to use for your network. This can be anything you want but we recommend avoiding personal information. Learn more by reading our guide titled Wireless Names.

Next is the 802.11 authentication. This should be set to WPA2-PSK. To learn why this is the best option for you, read our guide titled WEP vs. WPA.

Below that is the Encryption mode. Choose AES here.

The last thing you need to do is change the default WPA pre-shared key. This is the password you use to gain access to the local network. Create a strong password of at least 14-20 characters and a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. More tips can be found by reading our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password.

When you have finished click the option near the bottom labeled Apply.

To change the WiFi channel, click the option in the left sidebar labeled WLAN Advanced Settings.

This takes you to the page you see above. Find the Channel list and make sure you are using channel 1,6, or 11. These three channels are the only three you should be using, learn why by reading our WiFi Channels Guide.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
