How to Reset the Huawei HG556a

Have you tried to login to the Huawei HG556a router and been unable to? You may need to reset the router. This is not the same thing as a reboot. When you reboot a router you cycle the power to the unit. When you reset the router you take all the settings and return them to factory defaults.

Warning: Resetting this router is a big step and you should take caution. A reset erases every setting you have ever changed in the history of this router. Some of these settings are:

  • The router's main username and password.
  • The WiFi username and password.
  • If this is a DSL router you need to re-enter the Internet Service Provider (ISP) username and password. Call your ISP for these details.
  • Any other settings such as port forwards or IP addresses are also erased.

Reset the Huawei HG556a

With the router powered on take a straightened paperclip and press down on the reset button for about 10 seconds. This begins the reset process. If you don't hold the reset button down for long enough you might end up only rebooting the unit instead of resetting it like you initially wanted.

Take caution. This reset erases every single setting you have ever changed in the history of this router. Take the time to consider other troubleshooting options before you decide to reset the Huawei HG556a router.

Login to the Huawei HG556a

Tip: If the defaults didn't work it is possible you didn't hold the reset button down for long enough.

Change Your Password

Tip: If you need a place to put your new password so you won't lose it you could write it down on a post-it note and attach it to the underside of the router.
