This brings you to the page you see here. Find the Wireless heading, it is on the left side of the page. In this section:

  • Click the Enable radio button.
  • Use the box titled SSID to enter a name for your network. This name is the network identifier. It doesn't matter what you enter here but it's a good idea to avoid personal information. For more on this topic, read our How to Change your Wireless Name Guide.
  • If you want to hide your SSID you just created click the Disable radio button. If you decide to hide your name, it doesn't make you completely invisible. A network intruder can still find hidden networks if they want to.
  • Next is the Channel. Use this drop down list to be sure you are using channels 1,6, or 11.To learn why this is the best option, read our guide titled WiFi Channels.
  • Below that is the security. WEP is the only option here. This is an old security version. You need to update your firmware to allow for WPA2-PSK with an encryption of AES. Read our WEP vs. WPA guide. After upgrading you need to enter a pre shared key. This is the password and should be strong. Read our Choosing a Strong Password Guide for more details.
  • Once you are done, click the Apply button.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
