It might be time to consider a reset if you have been unsuccessful when trying to login to the Linksys DD-WRT-v24-SP2 router.

When I use the term reset I am not referring to a reboot. A reboot is simply a cycle in the power to the unit. Absolutely no settings are changed. When you reset a router you take all the settings and revert every one of them back to factory defaults.

Warning: This means every single setting you have ever changed is erased. I strongly recommend that you try other methods of troubleshooting before you continue. Once you have determined a reset is your only course of action you should make a list of all the possible settings you have changed in the past. This includes settings such as:

  • The router's main username and password.
  • The WiFi information such as SSID, password and encryption.
  • If this is a DSL router you need to re-enter the ISP or Internet Service Provider username and password.
  • What other settings have you changed? Make sure to write these down as well.

Reset the Linksys DD-WRT

Below is an image of a Linksys router back panel. Typically the reset button is on the back panel like the one below but could be anywhere on the device.

While the router is on take a straightened paperclip or similar object and press down on the reset button/pinhole for about 10 seconds. This begins the reset process. If you don't hold the reset button down for the full amount of time you might end up only rebooting the router instead of resetting it like you wanted.

Warning: Make sure you DO NOT unplug or turn off the Linksys DD-WRT-v24-SP2 router during the reset process. This could cause permanent damage to the device.

Don't forget this reset erases every single setting you have ever changed. You need to reconfigure the router after the reset is complete just like you would with a brand new one. I highly recommend trying other methods of troubleshooting before you decide a reset is your best course of action.

Login to the Linksys DD-WRT

To login to the router after the reset is complete you will have to use the default IP adress, password, and username. We have compiled this information for you in our Linksys DD-WRT-v24-SP2 Login Guide.

Tip: If the defaults did not work, don't panic! The router might not have been properly reset. Try resetting it again but make sure to hold down the button for a little longer than last time.

Change Your Password

The default password for a router is not very secure and should be as changed as soon as possible. If you need some help coming up with a unique and secure password check out our Choosing a Strong Password guide.

Tip: Worried about losing your new password? Try writing it down on a piece of paper and attach it to the bottom of the router.
