Before we get started there is a little bit of background info that you should be familiar with.

Wireless Password

An important part of securing your wireless network is choosing a strong password.

Wireless Channel

Picking a WiFi channel is not always a simple task. Be sure to read about WiFi channels before making the choice.

This takes you to the page you see here. Make sure the tab near the top labeled Wireless is selected.

Next, choose from 2.4 GHz network and 5 GHz network. Unless you live in a crowded environment such as an apartment building I recommend choosing 2.4 GHz network band. If you choose 2.4 GHz your network coverage is larger and stronger but there are fewer channel options. If you choose 5 GHz your coverage area is much smaller and weaker but there are a lot of channels to choose from. This is important because you don't want to partially overlap a neighbors channel. You can learn a lot more about this in our WiFi Channels guide.

Choose Edit next to the network band of your choice. In this guide I will walk you through the 2.4GHz network.

Make sure the Network is Enabled.

Below that is the Network Name (SSID). This is the name you give your network so you can identify it later on. I recommend making this name unique but avoid personal and router specific information such as "aimiesLinksys". This makes you more vulnerable to possible attacks. Learn more about SSIDs in our How to Change your Wireless Name guide.

Under that is the Password. This is the most important step in creating a strong network. This password is how you will limit access to your network. Make a password of at least 14 characters. The more the better. Learn how to do this in our guide titled Choosing a Strong Password.

Next is the Security mode. For the strongest form of security choose WPA2 Personal. Find out what this means and your other options in our guide labeled WEP vs. WPA.

If you want to change the channel you can do that next. Open up the drop down list labeled Channel and choose the new channel you want to use for your network. If you use 2.4GHz make sure you only use channels 1,6 or 11. Find out why in our WiFi Channels guide.

That's it, when you are finished click the blue Apply button to save your changes.

Possible Problems when Changing your WiFi Settings

After making these changes to your router you will almost definitely have to reconnect any previously connected devices. This is usually done at the device itself and not at your computer.
